Freelance copywriter - Southampton

Hello, and welcome. I'm Guy Phillips, and I'm a copywriter based in Southampton, Hampshire, UK.

I’ve been working as a freelance copywriter since 1999. I’ve tended to focus on business-to-business copywriting, as well as writing for a wide range of education, social housing, IT and internet-related clients. I've also worked on companies’ internal communications projects and for government departments. And of course I offer copywriting for design and web agencies.

Asking the right questions

Old dictaphoneBut I specialise in no one particular area, and see it as a key strength to be an ‘inquisitive generalist’: my aim is to ask just the right questions to enable me to help sell all kinds of things for my clients. And over the years these ‘things’ have ranged from environmentally friendly paper cups to degree courses, and from servers in a data centre to a new strategy that needed launching to staff.

I mainly write for the web, for advertising and for print – although I write a pretty nifty press release too, if I do say so myself!

Copywriting light or copywriting regular?

I can edit your first draft, research and write from the ground up, or just provide a quick copy check. My experience ranges from writing websites to annual reports, and video scripts to brochures and other corporate literature. Many projects have been compiled largely based upon face-to-face or telephone interviews with staff or service users. Head over to my 'Copywriting examples' page for more information.

Plain English copywriting

I can also help with marketing communications and PR campaigns, working with a team of experienced associates as the project demands. Plain English copywriting, and ensuring translated copy 'rings true' for English readers, are other areas where I can help.

Where do you work?

I'm ideally placed to cover your copywriting projects in central southern England, especially within the Bournemouth & Poole, Southampton, Portsmouth, Salisbury and Winchester areas. I also have strong ties with Devon and Dorset, and frequently work for clients in London and further afield.

String theory and veggie breakfast in Chester

Well, there we were in a dodgy bed and breakfast in Chester, having decided to break our long journey back to Hampshire following a visit to Cumbria.

Freelancers facilitate flexibility

fastest writer pic courtesy Kriss Szkurlatowski; 12frames.euThe 'Professional Contractors Group' (PCG), an organisation that claims to be the 'voice of freelancing' in the UK, recently ran an ad in a national magazine which struck a chord with me.

"Freelancers... are bringing flexibility, dynamism, and experience to every level of business and government throughout the UK," proclaimed the PCG.

And there was more: "Freelancers choose to work without the employment benefits permanent staff take for granted. They prefer to hit the ground running, deliver and move on. They create competitiveness in the private sector and increase efficiency in the public sector."

Less copywriting can be more

It can be far more difficult – and therefore take more time – to craft a shorter piece than to write a longer one.

But rather than equating to dumbed down, brevity can make copy far more compelling.
