Less copywriting can be more

It can be far more difficult – and therefore take more time – to craft a shorter piece than to write a longer one.

But rather than equating to dumbed down, brevity can make copy far more compelling.

 

When Mark Twain was sent a telegram request from his publisher, which said:

"NEED 2-PAGE SHORT STORY TWO DAYS",

he apparently replied:

"NO CAN DO 2 PAGES TWO DAYS. CAN DO 30 PAGES 2 DAYS. NEED 30 DAYS TO DO 2 PAGES".

And this is one of the reasons why freelance copywriters worth their salt don’t charge by the word.
